Garden Ponds

The most common type of pond that is constructed is garden ponds. A garden pond maybe used to grow water lilies and other water plants and fishes and may also be used to water the garden. The sizes and the shapes and usage of garden ponds depend on the person or persons who require it. A garden pond can be square, rectangular, oval, kidney shaped or any other shape that one chooses for the pond. A pond may be a water garden pond a fish pond or just a water supply pond. Most garden ponds will have some form of plants or fish or a combination of pond animals in and around them.

Before starting to build water garden pond do a bit of research on the Internet or in the local library about garden ponds and pond life and plants. Then select the shape, design and depth of the pond. When selecting a place for the garden pond remember that a garden water pond should receive four to six hours of sunlight for the water plants to thrive and if there are any trees growing close by their leaves are going to fall in the pond during fall. Once the place has been selected and cleared mark out the area and start digging. Place the dug earth along the edges of the pool. Once the soil has been dug and any stubborn roots cut cover the bottom and sides of the pond with pond underlay and then cover this with pond liner. If the sides of the pond are soft then reinforce them. If a waterfall and a skimmer are required then dig a ditch and place the pipe to feed the waterfall tank from the skimmer.

The water filter and waterfall reservoir tank should be positioned just before the waterfall. Make the waterfall and do the necessary plumbing for the pump or pumps that are required for the pond. Rocks and stones for the waterfall should be cemented to the pond liner and other rocks can be placed as one wants in the pond. Pound the soil that was dug out from the pond to form a slight incline to the pond. Once the cement has set and all the rocks and pebbles and plants are in place start filling the point and then sit back and relax listening to the sound of the waterfall splashing into the pond. Remember the more bubbles you see forming around the waterfall the better as this indicates that the pond water is being well oxygenated.

All garden pond material can be purchased from garden pond supplies stores. One can construct more then one garden pond and have garden ponds and streams that are connected.

If one does not want to go through the hassle of building a pond with pond underlay and liners one can use fiberglass. Fiberglass garden ponds are not as expensive as one imagines and the bigger the pond the less will be the cost. Building a fiberglass garden pond requires one to dig the hole for the garden pond and then mix fiberglass mats with resin and cover the floor and sides of the pond. One can set their own pace to build a fiberglass garden pond. Should any cracks appear in the fiberglass one can just mix fiberglass and resin and cover them.

There are several designs and preformed garden ponds are also available that one can purchase and all one needs to do is to dig the hole or get it dug and install the preformed garden pond. When the water garden pond is flourishing takes pictures as water garden pond pictures can be used as greeting cards and invitation cards. Nice garden pond photos can also be enlarged and framed.

Do remember to chlorinate the pond once before filling it up with water and do get some Anacharia plants and one can also get packaged bacteria to start the pond life. So whether one builds a water garden pond or a garden pond it is going to be a place for one to visit and relax and if there are fish in the pond then they will need to be fed. If there are small children around then do make sure they don’t get near the pond unattended.
