Pond Filters

Any fish pond is going to require some sort of filtration and it is believed that the filtration required is dependent on the number of fishes in the pond. Farm ponds and large fish ponds do not require any filtration as they filter themselves it is the small goldfish pond and koi pond that require filtration. There are basically three categories of filtration that are commonly used. They are mechanical, chemical and biological. Mechanical filters are based on filters which catch the debris in a pond and the filters require to be periodically cleaned. Some people prefer them as they are cheaper then the other types of filters. Chemical filters use activated carbon to remove the debris and waste from the water. They work on the principal of absorption and are good for smaller ponds. Biological filters are very popular with experienced pond fish keepers. They use a bacteria to colonize and biologically breakdown the harmful debris into less harmful and harmless bacteria. They are available in shapes and sizes and when attached to an inlet pipe they stop the harmful bacteria from flowing through.

A lot of fish pond keepers are going for homemade pond filters which are not to difficult for one to make. To make a homemade pond filter one basically needs an open container which could be a bucket with a sieve in it. Make an outlet hole at the bottom of the container and attach the input pipe for the pond pump to it. On the sieve place a piece of biological pond filter material and make sure that it fits snugly in the sieve and there are no open inlets into the bottom of the container. Attach the pipe to it and set it at the bottom of the tank. All one will need to do is to regularly take out and clean the filter. But don’t clean it too hard as the bacteria that are on it are what are cleaning the pool.

There are several immersed and stand alone filters available and for small fish like goldfish one does not need a very sophisticated filtration system. However koi are larger and generate more waste so a better filtration system would be required for them. The koi pond filters that are popular are the two or three chamber biological filters. These filters may have two three or four chambers as the pond water is forced into the filter and passes through the two or three chambers that contain the filters and the clean water is then pumped back into the pool. Vortex pond filters are mechanical filters that are used to brush out the heavy debris and stop it from entering the biological filters. This combination of filters is popular with koi fish pond keepers.

If one is searching for a fish pond filter it is better to use a combination of filters to keep the pond water as clean as possible and the fish healthy. Ultraviolet pond filters or UV pond filters as they are commonly called are used to break up the algae from forming in a pond.

Remember that whatever filtration method one uses for garden pond filters or koi pond filters or fish pond filters it is recommended to do as much research as possible and also make sure that the pond water circulation requirement is not reduced by the pond filter system as one cannot afford to starve the pond or impede the flow of the water in the pond. Laguna pond filters manufacturers offer a large range of pond filters which include filters that can be fitted before the waterfall as most fish ponds do have waterfalls.

One should know the capacity of the pond and the circulation requirements and should then select the filtration system. A clean pond is a healthy pond and the fish will love it.
