Pond Maintenance
One does not have to shy away from getting a garden or a fish pond just because one does not know anything about marine life or biology. It takes very little time to learn the basics of how to maintain a garden or fish pond. A term most pond keepers love to throw around is pH level and talk about 7 being the best level for a pond. Not to worry the number is just the hydrogen concentration level in the water. Any pond water is going to decay and there are a number of reasons for that. Falling leaves, fish feed, fish waste, decay all increase the nitrogen level in the water which can either increase the alkaline or the acidity of the water in the pond. Everything that decays requires oxygen so the best way to combat decay is to supplement the oxygen level in the water. This can be done by using an aerator which is something similar to what one sees in an aquarium or one can use a waterfall a fountain or a paddle wheel to aerate the water. How to maintain a healthy and productive fish farm is not very difficult one has to make sure that the water is clean, does not contain any harmful chemicals and has sufficient oxygen also that the temperature of the water does not fall or increase beyond limits. The pond depth and the number of fish in a fish pond are the two main deciding factors in maintaining a healthy fish pond. Waterfalls, fountains and paddle wheels add to the attraction of a pond however they only aerate the top of the pond and if it’s a deep pond then using an aerator which pumps compressed air and releases it from the bottom of a pond is a good option.
Algae control management pool maintenance is important and the best way is to have water plants that do not allow the algae to form in a pond. Anacharia plants are the best choice of water plants that cut the algae growth in a pond. A big pond like a farm pond is going to have a lot of other visitors to the pond that will add their own waste to the water. There are water cleaners that one can get but all of them contain some chemicals and where as by their usage a pond may look crystal clear they may leave chemicals that can kill the fish or the plants. If one has a fish pond one has to be extra careful before one includes and chemicals to the water to clean the water. For large size ponds filtration is not required as they filter themselves however for small ponds and koi and fish ponds filtration is required. There are biological, mechanical and chemical filtration methods that are used. It is best for one to use a combination of filtration methods to keep the pond clean.
Learning how to care for a koi farm will require some knowledge of this species of fish and what are the pond size requirements for them and the depth of the pond and also their feeding habits. Koi ponds will try any plant for dinner so one has to know which plants to grow in a koi fish pond which will not get eaten up. In areas where the winters are harsh one will need to use a deicer to keep the pond from freezing over. Some people prefer the floating deicer and others prefer using a submersible heater and others prefer solar heaters to keep the pond from icing.
There are a number of books available on pond construction and maintenance and it is a good idea to go over some books before one starts building a pond.
