Ponds Liners
Pond liners are now becoming increasingly popular for constructing ponds in a water garden pond, fish pond or in a lawn pond. The reason for pond liners popularity is that they are affordable, flexible and durable and a good quality pond liner will have a minimum life of twenty years. There is a variety of garden pond liner and fish pond liner available and one has to be sure that the pond lining that one selects is suitable for the pond that is to be constructed. All ponds lining material is made from rubber, plastics, fiberglass and chemicals. One should remember that it is the ultra violet rays of the sun that are the biggest enemies of any pond liner material. EPDM, polypropylene, polyethylene are some of the most commonly used pond liners. Plastic pre formed plastic liners are preferred by some pond builders as they are easier to install. All one needs to do is mark out and dig the area where the pond is to be installed. Some extra area around the pond area should be dug out. Then the bed should be firmed and sand put in it so that it is level and there are no sharp edges in it. Place the preformed pond liner in it and make sure that it is level. Connect the necessary pumps, pipes, etc and firm up the sides of the pond.
EPDM pond liner is one of the most flexible and easy to install garden pond liner as it will fit into all the nooks and cranny and bends that there may be in a pond. However if one is planning on making a very large pond there maybe a need to seam two or more rolls of epdm pond liner together and this can be a hassle as weather conditions have to be perfect and there should be no moisture on the liner surfaces. Secondly one will need a hard flat surface to join and seal the seams and the seam tape tends to stick to everything, so do watch out.
Before putting in any pond lining it is a good idea to make sure that the pond bed is flat and there are no sharp surfaces of rocks or roots that could damage the pond lining on the pond bed and the sides. Calculation of liner size for ponds maybe a bit difficult as one does not want the pond liner to be too small or there is too much wastage. It is best to get some expert help on this as calculating the pond liner size required for a square or rectangular shape pond is easy to calculate but other shapes like, oval or kidney or semi-circular are not all that simple. However do remember to leave some overlap as the weight of the water is going to draw in some of the pond lining from the sides especially if the pool has an awkward shape or has slopes in it. For a simple calculation of a pond that is 10 feet long and 6 feet wide and the depth is 2 feet, the liner required would be:
(10+2+2+1) x (6+2+2+1) = 15x11.
The depth of the pool is doubled in the length and breadth of the liner that would be required and an extra foot is added for overlap. If one is building a fish pond then do make sure that the fish pond liner is a fish safe pond liner and does not have any toxic chemicals in it as these can kill the fish. Do check up on other peoples experience in using different fish pond liners before making a decision. On this there is plenty of information available on the Internet. Some people have kept fishes in ponds and had no problem where as others have experienced the fishes dieing in the pond they had just built.
