Waterfalls

Most people will have a waterfall in their ponds. The sound of the splashing water and the sight of a waterfall in a pond add to the ambience of the pond. The waterfall also helps in aerating the water of the pond. When one buys a pre-molded pond or decides on constructing a pond the waterfall gets added in. now one can easily purchase a waterfall which has been pre-molded or one can construct ones own. If one constructs ones own waterfall one just has to make sure that the waterfall channel is well lined with pond lining so that there is no seepage of the water. The second thing will be to workout the amount of water that will be required to pass over the waterfall. Do remember that the pond requires it water to be circulated at least once in two hours. So make sure that the water pump is up to it. Mother Nature has blessed earth with many natural waterfalls the biggest being the Niagara Falls. One can create a waterfall using natural stones. The waterfall must be harmony with the pond. Most people think that a large waterfall will look better but in most cases it does not in fact it can look quite ugly. A two foot waterfall is enough to give the sound of a natural waterfall. Look at waterfalls pictures to get ideas and then go about building a waterfall.

To build a waterfall one needs to stand in the pond and decide where the waterfall is going to be built. Decide on the height of the waterfall. Now there has to be an incline so that the water will flow over it into the pond and not flow backwards. After marking and lining the channel use flat slabs of rock or granite at the edge facing the pool over which the water will fall into the pool now place the water inlet over the slabs and see that the water is spilling over into the pool as one wants it to. Now place more rocks at the back and keep adjusting them so that the right effect of the waterfall is created. Then back up and add some more rocks make sure that at least one surface of the rock is flat so that they rest evenly on the flat rocks that one has started with now place more rocks at the desired spots and keep shifting them with the water running to make sure that the waterfall is looking as it was imagined before one started. Also step back in the pond and out of the pond and look at the waterfall from different angles to make sure that the waterfall is looking just right. To finish off make sure that the water pipe is positioned firmly. There should be an even flow of water to the waterfall.

The simplest way of making one’s own water fall is to use a container and bury it in sand or mud at a slight angle into the pool let the water flow into the container and at the angle positioned into the pool. One can camouflage the container with paint or by growing some plants in it.

A waterfall can be built in a pond or one can even have a backyard waterfall which may simply can be a rock faced waterfall and the water spilling down it and being pumped up to the top again. There are several ideas that one can get from the Internet or from magazines on building a waterfall. But it all has to start from the person who wants to have a waterfall in the pond or the backyard.
